One hidden, locked room was furnished like a cell with a bed covered with a foam pad, a plastic bucket and a roll of toilet paper. The property included a bunker with three rooms, two of them behind a hidden doorway. Ng and Lake held their victims in a remote 2.5-acre fenced compound in Calaveras County, about 150 miles east of San Francisco. Lake and Ng code-named their crimes 'Operation Miranda.' Prosecutors said that Lake was obsessed with pornography as a teen, and was inspired to kill by the novel The Collector, about a man who kidnaps a woman named Miranda and keeps her as a slave. She was 26 and living in San Francisco's Pink Palace apartment complex in 1984, when investigators say she met Lake, who offered her work on a 'pot farm'. Okoro, who grew up in Michigan, endured a traumatic childhood and sexual abuse, running away repeatedly and getting pregnant at 16. Now 62, he was convicted in 1999 of killing six men, three women and two baby boys in 19, and remains on California's death row.Īt Ng's trial, Okoro was named as one of the uncharged decedents in the case, and authorities said the total number of victims could have been as high as 25. ![]() Ng fled to Canada but was eventually extradited to the US to face trial. ![]() Lake and Ng's killing spree came to an end in 1985, when Lake was arrested for shoplifting and committed suicide by taking a cyanide pill he had hidden in his clothing.
